Australia has some excellent and world famous wine regions, but one of the relatively new (we’re talking about the 60’s) stand out places is Margaret River. This highly-respected region in the south west of Australia has many different styles of wine to suit the different tastes of its buyers. Let’s discuss these wines further, in particular the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Shiraz, the Cabernet Merlot, the Chardonnay and Sauvignon.
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon
In many peoples opinion, Cabernet Sauvignon is the star of the vineyard. Found in virtually every wine growing country on the planet, cabernet’s ability to produce impressive wines across so many different sites is unrivalled. Australian regions in which Cabernet Sauvignon is most well known is Coonawarra and Margaret River. Margaret River Cabernet sauvignon wines typically displays characters like blackcurrants, mulberries and mint with secondary characteristics like cedar, tobacco leaf and briar bush poking through.
Margaret River Shiraz
Shiraz is widely perceived as Australia’s premier grape variety and although we have produced many excellent examples of wines made from other grapes, Shiraz is the one that has captured the imagination of wine lovers and experts the world over. Barossa is the most famous place for producing award winning wines however, Margaret River is also an up and coming contender in the Shiraz stakes. Shiraz in Margaret River suffers a bit in the shadow of cabernet but can be a ripper in its own right – a bit like the older sister of a girl you once knew…attractive, fun, sophisticated and just slightly lovelier than the girl you are squiring!
Margaret River Cabernet Merlot
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are amongst the most popular red wine varieties in Australia and throughout the world. When blended together, they form a classic combination that is identified by breeding and distinction. According to a leading wine producer, the ideal blend of Cabernet Merlot is about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The Margaret River Cabernet Merlot by Flying Fish Cove is a first rate example of Margaret River cabernet merlot. A triple gold medal winner, the wine shows richness, concentration and elegance.
Margaret River Chardonnay
Margaret River is Western Australia’s most well known Chardonnay region. The wines are full-flavoured, rich and powerful, with the best examples having the ability to age for over a decade. Margaret River chardonnay is currently experiencing a new, exciting phase and renewed popularity.
Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is Australia’s highest selling white wine, ending Chardonnay’s 20 year rule. The major reasons for its astonishing rise to popularity are the wonderful aromatics and tropical fruit flavours it delivers, all for a price within reach of most. Margaret River is home to vast plantings of Sauvignon Blanc that blends beautifully with Semillon to produce WA’s acclaimed ‘Classic Dry White’ styles. Sauvignon Blanc’s aromatic muscle intermingled with palate softness and complexity brought by Semillon is a true hallmark.
